Para Álvaro Matute, compilador de este volumen, la reflexión histórica no se asienta en el terreno académico. En el periodo de 1940 a 1968, la historiografía logró expandirse hacia otros campos que no se creían tan cercanos a ésta. Un claro ejemplo de ello es la política, pues el desarrollo de la producción teórica favoreció la apertura de un espacio para el intercambio ideológico entre representantes de diversas instituciones mexicanas dedicadas, en grandes rasgos, a la investigación humanística.
