Rescue: Stories of Survival from Land and Sea offers stories about what happens when things go terribly wrong in some of the world's most perilous places: Himalayan peaks, African plains, vast oceans, remote Arctic wilderness. But mostly, Rescue is about what humans can endure and achieve in the face of overwhelming duress.

Adventure nonfiction, whether set in the mountains or at sea, provides some of the most entertaining reading and listening. The nine selections in this collection are taken from climbing books, magazines, and personal writings. All the readers let the suspense come from the narrative itself, and there's action aplenty--a dramatic rescue on Switzerland's Eiger in the 1960s, a wonderfully frightening narrative by a nineteenth-century trader on the Missouri, and an account of a turn-of-the-century doctor stranded on the ice in Newfoundland. The only clunker is the selection from THE WIND OF THE WILLOWS. Among these real-life dramas, the adventures of Mr. Toad just don't cut it. D.B. (c) AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine

This latest addition to the aptly titled Adrenaline series should get listeners' blood pumping during even the slowest commute, as a polished team of professional readers bring to life some amazing true adventures of people plucked from danger in a variety of settings. Editor Miller, herself a gifted outdoor writer, has chosen one of her own suspenseful stories, about an accident-plagued canoe trip, to include in this thoughtful, varied collection, based on a previously published book of the same title. The selection ranges from the classics ("Three Years Among the Indians and Mexicans," by Thomas James and some of Jack Olsen's best mountain-climbing stories); through some famous stories by Pete Sinclair, Ralph Barker and Geoffrey Childs; and even manages to find room for a whimsical bit from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, nicely read by Graeme Malcolm. The other readers also add interesting variations to the exciting material, managing to re-create scenes of outdoor action and emotion with ease. Anyone who thinks their own life might be enlivened by climbing a mountain or plunging into some rapids can find affirmation (or excuses) in this high-tension anthology. Based on the Thunder's Mouth paperback (Forecasts, May 29, 2000).
