La personalidad de don Juan de Austria siempre se ha opuesto a la de su hermano Felipe II, saliendo beneficiado el primero. Juan es el vencedor de Lepanto mientras el monarca nos parece un hombre huraño y triste, encerrado en El Escorial. Don Juan era hijo natural del emperador Carlos V y Bárbara Blomberg. Estudió en Alcalá de Henares, junto a Alejandro Farnesio y el príncipe Carlos.
