From the first page this book lives up to DK's motto: "The guide that shows what other guides only tell you!" Malaysia and Singapore are divided by region and include detailed maps and street finders for major cities. "Portrait" encompasses landscape/wildlife, including marine life; "People" describes the indigenous, who are among the world's most fascinating. "Religion" focuses on Islam, Malaysia's official religion, while secular architecture has its own section. "History" includes a helpful time line beginning at 40,000 BC through 2015. Descriptions of sights include address, map location, transportation, and handicapped accessibility. Also covered are city sights and outdoor activities (e.g., diving, caves, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks). Photos show Malaysia's first concert hall, the spectacular Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in Kuala Lumpar, Singapore's otherworldly-looking Supertree Grove in Garden-by-the-Bay, and Rafflesia, the world's largest flower. "Where To Eat and Drink" covers street food and local goodies. "Shopping" suggests buying gorgeous kites and good-luck charms, which are inexpensive, fun purchases. "Survival Guide" describes the usual with the addition of social customs, personal security/health, and subway maps. VERDICT This inclusive photographic treat will make even "stay at home" travelers feel like they are actually there.--Susan G. Baird, formerly with Oak Lawn P.L., IL
