La vita dell'autore fu lunga e tragica, nell'accezione piu vera del termine, ossia nel senso che essa fu dominata da una profonda, segreta tensione: una vera tragedia dell'anima.
Tolstoj stesso riteneva che il 1878 fosse lo spartiacque tra due fasi della sua esistenza, nella prima il grande scrittore (famosissimo e tronfio della fama letteraria), nella seconda la rinascita spirituale.
Questa grande frattura sara fonte di difficolta, contraddizioni e spesso incomprensioni nello studio della persona, difficolta che ancor oggi, sono presenti.
