《茶花女》是根据小仲马的一段亲身经历写成的。十九世纪四十年代初，他认识了一位交际花，她名叫玛丽。迪普莱西，真名为阿尔丰西娜·普莱西，尤爱茶花。很快他就成为她的情人，为她负了债。但次年他们发生了争吵，断绝了来往。一八四六年，她秘密嫁给了一位伯爵。一八四七初，玛丽病逝于巴黎，时年二十三岁。小仲马在马赛得知了噩耗，赶回巴黎，花了一个月工夫，一气写成了《茶花女》。
